For warp yarn:
Weight (kg) = (EPI × Reed Space × Length × Crimp Factor) / (1693.36 × Count Ne)
Where:
- EPI = Ends Per Inch (warp density)
- Reed Space = Width in inches
- Length = Production length in metres
- Crimp Factor = 1 + (Crimp% / 100), typically 1.05–1.10 for warp
- 1693.36 = Conversion constant (840 yards × 0.9144m / 0.453592 kg)
- Count Ne = English cotton count of the yarn
Understanding the Constant: 1693.36
This constant converts between the English count system and the metric system:
- 1 Ne = 840 yards of yarn per pound
- 840 yards × 0.9144 (m/yd) = 768.1 metres
- 768.1 metres / 0.453592 (kg/lb) = 1693.36 metres per kg per Ne
So for 1 Ne yarn, 1693.36 metres weighs exactly 1 kg.
Practical Example
Calculate warp yarn for a basic shirting fabric:
- EPI: 88, Reed Space: 65 inches, Length: 1000 metres
- Yarn Count: 60 Ne, Warp Crimp: 10%
Weight = (88 × 65 × 1000 × 1.10) / (1693.36 × 60) = 61.9 kg
