What is GSM in Textiles? A Complete Guide

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter — the weight of one square meter of fabric measured in grams. It is the single most important quality indicator in the textile industry, directly influencing fabric feel, durability, and cost.

Why GSM Matters

GSM determines the hand feel, drape, opacity, and end-use suitability of a fabric. Buyers specify GSM requirements, and mills must deliver within tight tolerances (typically ±5%).

How to Calculate GSM

There are two primary methods:

Method 1: From Thread Count (Design Stage)

GSM = ((EPI / Warp Ne) + (PPI / Weft Ne)) × 25.1

This is a quick structural estimate useful during the design phase. The constant 25.1 applies to cotton in the English (Ne) count system.

Method 2: From Actual Weight (Production)

GSM = (Total Weight in grams) / (Width in meters × Length in meters)

This is the definitive measurement used in quality control labs.

Factors That Affect GSM

  • Yarn Count: Lower Ne = thicker yarn = higher GSM
  • Thread Density: Higher EPI/PPI = more threads per area = higher GSM
  • Weave Structure: Satin has lower GSM than twill at the same density
  • Finishing: Sanforizing, mercerizing, and calendering can change GSM by 5-15%
  • Crimp: Higher crimp percentages increase yarn consumption and GSM
